  • Psychoanalytic Criticism: Explores the unconscious desires and neuroses of characters or authors. It often looks for hidden motivations and symbolic meaning in dreams or actions.
  • Reader-Response Theory: Suggests that the meaning of a text is not fixed but is instead created by the reader’s reaction and personal experience.

📖 The Importance of Context: “I Will Marry When I Want” & “Betrayal in the City”

Both compulsory plays are powerful examples of African post-colonial drama. Betrayal in the City,” set in the fictional country of Kafira, is a sharp critique of government corruption, violence, and the betrayal of the independence struggle. Similarly, “I Will Marry When I Want” uses folkloric elements to highlight the hypocrisy of the elite and the exploitation of the poor, drawing on the spirit of the Mau Mau rebellion to encourage resistance. Understanding this historical and political context is crucial for a top-scoring essay.

💡 Study Tips for Success

  1. Active Reading: When studying your set texts, pay close attention not just to the plot, but to the characters, themes, and the author’s use of language.
  2. Understand the Marking Scheme: As shown in the marking guide, your essays must have a clear introduction, a well-developed main body with examples, and a conclusion.
  3. Practice with Past Papers: This exam paper is an excellent resource. Time yourself while answering the essay questions to get used to the exam conditions.
