Founded in 1956, The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization providing direct assistance to conflict-affected populations – refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and host communities – in more than 40 countries around the world. DRC has been implementing emergency response projects in Tanzania since the onset of the Burundi refugee crisis in 2015 in three refugee camps in the Kigoma Region at the border with Burundi. DRC’s integrated projects for refugees, asylum seekers and host communities comprise sectors such as Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), Protection (CBP, PSN, GBV, CP and Legal), Shelter and infrastructure, and Economic Recovery.
Overall purpose of the role:
DRC is one of the largest INGO protection actors in Tanzania actively coordinating and advocating for improving the protective environment for all communities. DRC implements a comprehensive protection programme including Legal assistance, support to persons with special needs (PSN), community-based protection (CBP), Child Protection, and GBV prevention and response activities in its areas of operation to address protection issues faced by displaced and at-risk groups and individuals. The program also aims to identify and build synergies with early recovery and development actors to address environment-building activities.
The Protection Coordinator has the overall responsibility for the delivery of all Protection activities in Nduta camp. This will include the supervision of Protection staff as well as providing technical and programmatic support needed for the delivery of high quality, needs-based and timely protection activities in Nduta camp. The role will include ensuring harmonization of tools, implementation of strategy, and training to ensure DRC has a consistent and clear approach to protection across all sites. The Protection Coordinator will work closely with the Protection Manager (PM) and the Area Manager (AM) in the finalization and rollout of the protection strategy including the development of protection-related advocacy messages using data-driven evidence. This role has an area focus and ensures compliance with DRC procedures and guidelines within the country.
Overall responsibility includes quality and timely management of Protection projects in villages and camps across the Kigoma region, as well as supervising protection sector project teams, representation at relevant sectoral Working Groups, coordination with implementing partners and with other stakeholders including local authorities. The role contributes to the development of DRC Tanzania protection strategy, which is translated into action plans and day-to-day tasks. This role is based in Nduta camp and also supports implementation of activities in the neighboring host communities.
